Anthony Garafola and 1001 Nights

1.Using twitter was an awesome experience. It gave me a chance and others a chance to see a play by play of what was happening in theirs and others lives. I was anxious to find out what everyone was doing and what was going on in their daily lives as well as share anything that was going on with me. I feel that the posts were very random and not intimate at all which is understandable. After all we only had a short time to do the assignment and people do not really know each other that well to post anything too revealing about their lives. But overall it was interesting to see what people’s thoughts at a particular moment in time were. For this assignment, I feel that the time in general is teleological. I believe that there is always a beginning middle and then an end. But I also believe within these sub categories stellar time kicks in and affects our daily lives I also believe that things happen for a reason and that no matter how things work out it was meant to be. Now, I am not saying that everything is predetermined in our lives but that there are many factors that contribute to how our lives are shaped.
2. In the tale of 1001 night’s fate plays a huge role. It is clear that what happen to these characters are acts of fate meaning they are meant to be. With the story of the fisherman and the jinni, it happens that this old, poor fisherman catches many things. One of the items he catches on his 4 casts is a copper jar. Now there is no way anyone can convince me that that was a coincidence. It was clearly meant for this fisherman to get a hold of this jar. He was there at the right moment at the right time and luckily became wealthy. There was even a point where this fisherman was in fact going to lose his life as this jinni was frustrated that no one has freed him up until now. And that is was the jinni’s promise to give the option how the person who freed him would lie to die. Luckily, the fisherman was quick on his feet and was able to trick the jinni to go back in the bottle and when the jinni became desperate to be set free, the fisherman was able to barter a deal with the jinni to let him out of the jar and where he wouldn’t lose his life. Therefore this story depicts not only Teological but stellar time as there is a beginning, middle and end but the fisherman was affected by this jinni who he was not aware was going to affect his life that day.
3. In the tale of the Husband and the Parrot, the husband purchases a parrot to watch over his wife while he is away. The story starts off with how he is deeply in love with is wife and is made mad-jealous. It is also discussed how beautiful she is. When the husband is away the wife commits adultery and when the returns he finds out about it and kills his wife and the Turk who she was sleeping around with. The ending is a bit over the top depiction of the Islamic culture and what men will do to their wives. However in the Islamic culture according to the Quran 4:34 the man is not only the head of the household but he is in charge. The women are treated as subordinates and must obey the man; men are the protectors and maintainers of women. As in this story and as of todays Islamic practices it is similar that the man is clearly superior to women since women are not viewed the same as men; they are inferior.

There are somethings that are created just for the sake of wasting your time and of course the root of all evil ...money, it funny thinking about the two, seeing how they both tend to cross paths in many situations, money is made in time and time is expensive...which one trumphs the other? that could be a question in line with why are we here?


1. this was the first time being exposed to the world of twitter and it was as useless as tits on a boar, i had one hundred forty characters to type my thoughts, perfect for the mindless twits that idolize Paris Hilton and love the fucking show "The Hills"... I would need a bottle of codeine pills just to sit through twenty minutes of that crap. So of course the type of time is entropic, its perfect for telling people that you think Johnny is cute and how much of his peter rabbit you can fit in your mouth (penis, for all you kids out there), i tried my best to type something relivent and I could see that the rest of the class did the same, (I hope no one is offend by my statements, I'm not saying that all people that use twitter is a moron, I just feel that this site is just a way to exploit the stupid and I feel safer if stupid people don't know each other, take the Bush administration for example,..... see stupid people do bad things when they get together. *bad stupid people bad, get back in your corners and don't come out or I'll burn your neck with a cigarette*.. and if you are offended, boo hoo... i dont care). I will say I wasn't affected at all by what my peers was writing due to the fact most posting was about what they just did or at the moment going to do, so I learned of random details of you guys like who likes apples and who goes to bed at eleven, but nothing of substance like a favorite book or color, so we just became hollow shells that smile at each other.


2. Upon reading the tales of 1001 nights, i can see a pattern of teleological time but I become torn to the thought that all three types come into play. When reading the fisherman and the Jinni (yes, I am another person who will use this story to make my point) the story plays out with the cause and effect scenerio when the Jinni get tricked back into the bottle by the fisherman, the Jinni pleds with the fisherman to release him. the fisherman refuses and mention that this situation is similar as the story as the "Wazir of King Yanan with the sage Duban" it was because of this story they both came to a different understanding ...the story being the cause and the release of the Jinni and the fish for the fisherman is the effect. some may agree that this is stellar time, when it isnt at all, due to the fact the two events happened at different times stellar time is like cogs in a clock they must entwine in order for them to work.

3. it would depend on where in the world and the beliefs of the Arabic community on whether or not if this piece of work would be accepted. before the taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 1994, even while Russia occupied the region there was freedom of learning and expression. women was also looked at differently at that time as well. Where now with the strict rules from the taliban these reading would never be accepted. the taliban desnt allow music, reading, (unless it passes on a message that the taliban finds acceptable) kite flying, dancing, pictures, decorated walls in houses, or means for celebration (like cheering at a football/soccor game) let alone women lost all rights all together. but the arabic culture here in America can be different, they can be more opened minded and be acceptable to ideas or thoughts even if they don't agree with them.

1. What I have noticed on Twitter is that everyone mostly lives in Teleological time. They concentrate on their day and finding purpose from it. Many people look at how their actions affect them and what purpose it has given them. For example, they may write about their day at work or at school and how it was. This is a type of cause and effect which gives meaning to that morning. I noticed that I live in a Teleological/ Entropic time. I tend to be very random at times. I would focus on my wants and needs right now. If I am upset that is what I write I am upset right now. It brings no purpose, no cause and effect, and it does not affect anyone else’s day. I also tend to act the same way as my classmates and reflect on my day and decide whether it was rewarding or what purpose it has served me today.
2. The story 1001 Nights is comprised of 1001 stories that ‘interweave’ with one another, meaning that they intertwine. I had read the Tale of the Trader and Jinni and there I had observed one type of time: teleological. An example of this was when the merchant had killed a man with the stone of his date: this because a cause and effect making it a teleological time. Also, when the merchant had a year left to live and that every day was to be spent with a purpose. Every day was to pay off debts and spend time with the family.
3. In the Tale of the Trader and Jinni, the trader accidently kills the son of the Jinni. It is then that Jinni says that has to take the life of the trader. This is based on the saying eye for an eye. If you take out my eye I can take out yours, in a sense. Although many may view this issue as right or wrong, it still persists sometimes in Islamic countries such as Iran. There was a case of a woman in which her stalker threw acid in her face and blinded her. She had refused money and had insisted that the stalker be punished the same way as she had been by throwing acid in his face.

So the concept of eye for an eye, life for a life, etc still exists in some Arabic countries.

1. Since I started posting updates on twitter and reading people’s posts, I noticed that a lot of people live in Teleological time. According to what I’ve read, most people just write about the current events that are happening in their lives. Most of my twitter buddies write about what they did this morning or evening. They’re concentrating on the present and not really discussing what they might do in a year from now. I happen to also live in teleological time so I can relate to all these people. I was really affected by what everyone wrote because I felt like I had a connection with people that I barely knew. Everyday, I wonder if anyone is going through the same problems I am. Twitter, and other social networks like it, connects people in such a way that have never been done before since the beginning of civilization. A person can be affected by what another person has to share, half way around the world.

2. The stories of “1001 Nights” as stated “is also “interwoven” of different moments” In other words, although these are fictional stories, the tales are woven together consistently by the author. There are many lessons and small stories within the larger ones and many themes are woven together. Sometimes when events and themes are woven together, one can lose sense of the past, present, and future. In the story “King Sindibad and his Falcon” there is not really a mix of time settings intertwined, rather it seems to flow straight from the beginning of the story to the end. When this occurs, we call this “teleological time” This kind of time has a cause leading to an effect, or a beginning leading to an end, and there is a significant purpose. In this story, there is a beginning of the king raising a falcon, a middle of the story where the king and his men go hunting, where the king finally traps a gazelle with the aid of his falcon, and an ending where the king learns a lesson. He learns that he should not have assumed that his
falcon’s intentions were meant for harm, but rather the falcon’s intentions were for good as it tried to save the king from poison. This story is “teleological’ and has a direct beginning, middle, and end and a specificity of time rather than different phases being intertwined.

3. Most of these works from “1001 Nights” are derived from Arabic cultures and have many meanings that would be understood by the people of these countries. The story of ‘The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot” is a perfect example of a story that is relative to the Arabic culture. In this story, the wife cheats on her husband with a Turkish man while the husband is away. When the husband finds out about this from the parrot, he proceeds to beat her as it states “Thereupon the husband went to his wife in a violent rage and bashed her with a bashing severe enough to satisfy any body.” In many of the Arabic cultures, men are believed to be superior and they believe in beating their wives as is stated “Men are the managers of the affairs of women for that God has preferred in bounty one of them over another, and for that they have expended of their property. Righteous women are therefore obedient, guarding the secret for God's guarding. And those you fear may be rebellious admonish; banish them to their couches, and beat them. If they then obey you, look not for any way against them; God is All high, All great.” The practice of a husband beating his wife to therefore “punish” her to show power over her is common in many Arabic cultures, as “The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot” suggests.

1- I think stellar time is seen on twitter. I was never the kind of person that likes to send emails, use twitter or face book. When I made the account for this class I did not use it the first 2 days. But the first time I went online I was surprised by what my class mates are writing. The write every thing that happens to then in that day. There is no such think as privacy. People tell each other everything on twitter. I know that when a person speaks to a friend about a hardship he will fell a little happier because he has someone to speak to, but no anyone and not everything. This experience only forced my point that twitter, face book and other means of communication that we use these days are only taking us away from real life.

2- In the reading we have stories within stories, and they all interact together to make an ultimate story. A good example is the tale of the Bull and Ass. In that tale you have the story of the farmer who “Allah Most High had endowed him with under standing the tongues of beasts and birds” same as King Salomon. But that gift came with a cost and that is if any one know about the gift the farmer will die a horrible death. The other story is the dialogue between the Bull and the Ass which caused the farmer to laugh and made his wife upset. To make it up for his wife he was going to tell every body about the secret, which meant he wanted to kill himself and all that because of the dialogue between the bull and the Ass. The type of time theory that is presented is cause-effect theory.

3- From my knowledge of the Arabic culture I know that almost everybody has heard or read the 1001 nights. These tales are very famous in Arabic countries and a lot of movies were made from these tales. Prophet Mohammad since the start of Islam 15 centuries ago was asking both men and women to study and seek knowledge. There is a saying that he says “ask for knowledge even if it is in china.” Islam doesn’t treat women bad as the west proclaim. It is the west that treats women as sex object. You do not see as much divorce in Islam as you see in the west and that’s because Islam value women more.

1. From Twitter I felt that people still followed the Teleological time because they often started off the tweet with “this morning…” or “after work…” or “tonight…”. People often posted what they were about to do because of something that happened to them earlier in the day either at work or at school. It is also hard to get away from Teleological time since we are so use to it and also Twitter tells you when the tweet was posted. Only some people reported on random instances in their lifetime which would reflect the stellar time because I remember looking at a tweet and saying to myself “oh yea that has happened to me before” or felt that there was something I could relate to. I was affected by what people were posting because some people posted interesting articles and news that I ever heard of before. Thereby learning from each classmate and gaining more knowledge.

2.In The Tale of the Bull and the Ass two types of time exist. The story begins with the bull complaining to the donkey about all the labor he must do. The donkey gives him advice as to how he can get out doing work. A farmer gifted with the power to understand animals overhears all this. The farmer makes the donkey do all of the bull’s work. At the end of this story, the donkey tricks the bull back into doing his work. The farmer laughs at the two and begins another story about the farmer and his wife. In this story the farmer also takes advice from the dog regarding his wife. These two stories are told in the Teleological time format because the story is told as things happen and also shows a cause and effect relationship. The next story is involved jumps to tell about the king and a lady by the name of Scheherazade who is transported into his bed room. The story is linked to the previous two stories because Scheherazade hears of them. This is an example of Stella time because the characters in the two stories are intermingling with Scheherazade and affects her life.

3. I think that the Tale of the Husband and the Parrot would be well received by the Islamic countries today. I base my opinion on the recent law passed by the Afghanistan’s government which is the law that it is legal for a man to rape his wife. The law was revoked later on due to pressure from other countries. However this shows that women are treated as second class citizens .
