1001 NIGHTS

Question 1. People’s everyday lives are reflected on such websites as twitter, face book, hi5, etc. people share their opinions, experiences and sometimes feelings regarding different issues with others. As I followed some people on twitter, I was able to see certain activities from their lives on a daily basis. Even though we did not spend much time on twitter, it was enough to see these people’s moods. I could learn how they were feeling or what was going on in their lives in that particular moment or what happened that day and why they wanted other users to know about it. As I observed, most of the people write about their activities during a day. They express their feelings about some interesting aspects of a daily life or write about some occurrence that made them feel bad or good. In some cases, twitter works as an information source as people ask each other different questions. For instance, they might ask what the homework for Tuesday English class is. I think all the activities on twitter are referring to teleological time. If there is no purpose in life, then what are we living for? However, sometimes when things go wrong, it’s very hard to see a path, a reason that you living for. But time goes by and heals all the wounds, and we are back to linear time that relates to a purpose of life.
Question 2. 1001 Nights is a series of stories within stories; in other words, the book offers a chain of stories. For example, Herein tells the story of King Shahryar and his younger brother, Shah Zaman, King of Samarcand, who discover their own wives are disloyal and become enraged toward all women. The story begins with King Shahryar sending his Wazir with presents and invitation to his brother Shah Zaman. Shah Zaman accepts the invitation and pays his bother a visit.
King Shahryar concludes that all women are innately unfaithful and, to make sure that he is nobody’s fool, starts killing each wife of his after the wedding night.

This results in shortage of women after some time; the king's Wazir has problems getting new women, and tells about it to his daughter Scheherazade. The latter offers herself as bride for the night. The Wazir responds to Scheherazade’s suggestion with a story about the bull and the ass. Such allegorical tales, dotted into the main story, are characteristic for the Arabic Nights. Such technique of storytelling keeps the reader’s curiosity alive. In spite of the father’s resistance, Scheherazade manages her way to the king’s bed. As the king and Scheherazade’s sister, Dunyazade, who also finds herself in the king’s bedroom, suffer from sleeplessness, Scheherazade tells another story titled The fisherman and the Jinni.

As I have mentioned above, 1001 nights also known as Arabian Nights, consist of stories into the stories; this is an interesting approach to narration. Different stories carry different messages of a didactic nature. The story of King Shahryan and His Brother has a dramatic ending, whereas The Tale of the Bull and the Ass ends happily. In these two stories we are dealing with entropic or chaotic time in which events are completely random.
Question 3. Collections of tales of the One Thousand and One Nights already existed in the tenth century. The tales provide a good source of different aspects of life. One of these aspects is the treatment of women in Arabic countries. However, time did not change the approach of Arabic cultures to the feminine part of humanity. In Islamic countries, women are considered subordinates and are treated badly. Reports about abuses committed against women are published in Islamic press on a daily basis. In Arabic countries, it is thought that women's lives have less significance than those of men's. Although the prophet Muhammad granted women with certain rights that dramatically improved women’s condition compared to that that women had before Islam, after Muhammad’s death the attitude toward women in Arabic countries slowly deteriorated and returned to pre-Islamic norms. I believe the Nights will not cause any controversy in a modern Arab reader as he/she will not find anything drastically “disrespectful” or “harmful” in how women are treated in the book. Unfortunately, the situation has not changed much. http://www.uga.edu/islam/Islamwomen.html)

Assigment 2

Q 1: I personally was never a big fan of Twitter; as a matter of fact I made a bet with my friends that I would never ever be on twitting. But even in my wildest dreams, I never thought that I would have to be active on Twitter for an assignment for school. So, yes I lost the bet..:(… I found Twitter sort of useless and boring. Some people take it way too seriously and update it like every other minute; every move they make and every breath they take, it’s ridiculous. I understand its peer pressure and people naturally just love talking about themselves and their life, in most cases bragging about what they are doing or complaining about their personal issues. I prefer not to share too much information on Twitter because you never know who may read it, so your privacy is pretty limited. Anyway, based on all he peoples updates that I read, it seems to me that there are three types of time that persist in our online lives and reality. Some of the things people wrote about relate to entropic time of their life. These people are very random and sometimes don’t make any sense at all or have too many things happening at once which makes their life chaotic. And then you have people stuck in stellar time, where they write about things that affect them the most that somehow influenced their physical and emotional state to be and respond in a certain way. Lastly, Teleological time; I saw people writing about something that happened and then describing why or how it happened. My life is based on teleological and stellar time but sometimes it’s also entropic/ chaotic.

Q2:

In the “Tale of the trader and the Jinni”, the time frame is probably stellar or chaotic. Chaotic because when Ifrit sort of jumped out with a knife threatening to kill the merchant, it was a very random and an unexpected event. It’s also Stellar time because it suggests that everything happens for a reason and we have to learn from our mistakes and hopefully warn or teach others. It’s because stellar time intermingles scenarios that affect our daily lives. And then like a similar story “The Fisher man and the Jenni” , also follows similar time frame.

Q:3

These works in 1001 Nights derive from Arabic cultures. In these stories, women are portrayed very badly. They were taken advantage of and accused of things such as cheating, lying, stealing, witchcraft and much more. Many years ago in Arabic cultures, women had absolutely no rights and were treated as property with no respect or appreciation for anything they did for men. They were looked down upon and made a fool of. Nowadays, more modernized societies in the Arabic culture treat women better and provide them with similar opportunities and advantages as men get. Women are freer to do what they please, to work, learn, and have a say in the way their life is being planned out. The “Quran” provides it’s believers with like a set of rules, religiously implanting knowledge into the brains of Islamic people, encouraging them to be more open minded about a woman’s ability and respect her enough to see her as an equal body and to love her and to provide for her and the family.

Everyday we wake up, we have list of things to do. Some has school, homework, go to work, etc. But not all them were done accordingly. Some gets disturbed by new things and some by other valid reason. They all want to share their good/bad feeling either with someone close or through twitter or facebook. What happened in their life, who they hate/love, why they are happy and sad, etc? They post their different feeling and get commented with advice, inspirational words. They feel good and make an attempt to move on. Next day they have the same schedule, trying to move forward. Not getting disappointed by past and in hope of getting things done this time. But life is not a simple path; it has lots of turns and red lights on its way. According to me, stellar time is most influenced by twitter. People not only share their feeling but also share what affect their life. For instance, someone posted “I hate rain” other day, so now I know that that particular person hates rain. From twitter, I came to know that when the homework was due, who did what through out the day, etc. If life is just about you then, there is no meaning of life. If there are no ups and downs then life is boring. As a personal example, before I came to US, life was much comfortable with mom and dad. I don’t have to do anything (laundry, cook food, clean my room, etc). However, after my first step into the United States, life changed dramatically and as unexpected. I suffered a lot to continue my living. Even though I suffered, I am happy now. I can tell dad and mom that I am earning for my expenses, and I am independent. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Arab_societies)

2. In 1001 Nights, all the stories are connected to each other. Story with in the story connects each story like a stairs, first then second. One story finishes and other begins leaving the first one incomplete. Once you start reading you get lost in the current story and forget about the past story. In my point of view, Teleological time is related to all of the story. “In the Tale of the Bull and the Ass” when the merchant finished his story, his daughter Shahrazad said “I will do to thee as did the husband to the wife” She was not convinsed by her dad story and finally did what she liked and married to the king. Her sister Dunyazade asks Scheherazade to tell a story. With the permissoin of king, she started telling story of The Fisherman and The Jinni where a young man tells the story of his life to Sultan. After that story there she started other story of The Tale of The Ensorceled Prince, where the same Sultan kills the sick lover. So one story leads to the second one and the process continues. Due to this fact, the main story was unknown and was never completed. This was just to live one more night.

3. I got an opportunity to do some research on women in third world countries (Especially Arab). Women in these places have throughout history, experienced discrimination, lack and absent of their freedoms and rights. Some of these practices are based on religious beliefs, but many of the limitations are cultural and from tradition rather than religion. Women have no rights, no powers. They were sold into marriage by their guardians for a price paid to the guardian, the husband could terminate the union at his will, and women had little or no property or succession rights. In other tribes, women were of low status or even worse. Women enjoyed no rights whatsoever and were treated no better than a commodity. Not only they were slaved, but they could also be inherited as a possession. A woman was regarded as unwise and incapable of effectively managing her inherited property. In “The Tale of the Bull and the Ass”, merchant’s wife was beaten by her husband and she wasn’t able to do anything. Instead, she told her she will told him not to ask the same question again in her life time. However, the world is changing rapidly. Women’s progress until recently was slow and extremely limited but it’s growing. In the more conservative countries, greater opportunities for education, through university level, are being made available to women. In Egypt, women serve in Parliament and the cabinet (Kuwait and Iran). Recently a woman was named director of the national television stations, a very powerful position. In Syria, the Minister of Culture is a woman. In Jordan, there has been tremendous economic development, which has had an enormous impact on the status of women. In just a decade, women have won the right to vote and run for election. They now have a woman Minister of Social Development and four women on our Consultative Council, the equivalent of Congress. All these advances have happened rapidly. Today, it is estimated that 17 percent of the total Jordanian working force consists of women. (http://www.usnews.com/articles/news/national/2008/05/16/the-role-of-women-is-changing-in-the-arab-world-a.html) You can watch this video by Queen Rania from Jordan which clearly talks about the women in Arab world regarding their status and improvements. Several of these stories portray women as being promiscuous and having a large sexual appetite. I think people in Islamic countries today would tend to disagree with this portrayal and would point to Hollywood as a place where this type of woman would be more likely to exist. I think Islamic countries tend to view their relationships between husband and wife as 'better' than in the West evidenced by their lower divorce rates.
Several of these stories mentioned Allah and his supreme authority. I think that these depictions are accurate even to the present day and stories that focused more on Allah and Islams' spiritual teachings and beliefs are likeley to be better received.
In (No. 94) The King And The Virtuous Wife the king visits another man's wife and asks her for a drink and realizes that he wants to sleep with her and lets her know. She responds by getting him to read of the punishment from Allah if he were to commit adultery and he repents and changes his mind. The wife tells her husband of this when he comes homes but he thinks that the king and his wife had sex, so he stops sleeping with her. At this point the narrator starts telling a story about how the wife's friends explain to the king that a good piece of land is not being sown but not being given to another to be sown either. The king approached the husband who explained that he did not want to compete with a lion (King) for the land.
The story the wifes' friends use to explain what is going on in her relationship seemed confusing at first. Upon further examination I'd say it was an example of Teological time since their dialogue with the king and then his dialogue with the husband was was clearly a means to an end.
After reading some Twitter posts and thinking about my own life, I think that everything happens in either Teological or Stellar times not just one or the other. It seems that Teological time is predominant since most people, including myself, seem to live daily life and take actions that are linear and lead to an end. However, as we progress we are sometimes faced with situations that just do not seem to make sense if we were to view life as linear. Someone may say something that leaves an impression but we are left wondering "What was that all about?" I think when people are faced with personal tragedies they try to understand the meaning or purpose of the event but are not necessarily able to do so.

Arabian Nights

1. I think twitter is a great way for people to keep their friends and family up-to-date on what they are doing right at this moment. It has no influence on me but I can see why some people might like it. In our world today it is difficult to keep in contact with all friends because of work, family, school and other obligations. So Twitter is a way for somebody to just enter information really quickly and everybody who follows the “Tweets” knows what’s going on in their friend’s life.
What bothers me about it is that everybody can see everything all the time. Some things are just private thoughts or feelings that should be discussed in person and not over the World Wide Web.
I have to say I was a bit affected by what my peers wrote, because it is interesting to know what people are thinking about at certain points in time. That’s probably something that they would otherwise never share during a regular conversation.
In reference to the type of time used at Twitter, I would say teleological because there is a purpose and a beginning and end to the posts. Most people posted what they were doing at the point or during the day all setup in linear time.

2. In the stories I read I would say that teleological time is used. In “The Thief and the Shroff” a thief tries to steal a bag of gold pieces from a shroff. He goes about it very cleverly and waits till the shroff is at home and leaves the bag with gold on the counter while he goes to the bathroom. After the thief presents his price to his friends, they convince him to bring the gold back so that the slave girl won’t be punished for stealing it. He makes up a scheme and goes back to return the gold pieces but in the end he saves the girl and keeps the gold. I think this shows a beginning of that particular story following through to the end. But as with all of Scheherazade’s tales, this one is interwoven with the next one and so forth which makes it entropic / chaotic time as well, because in the end, nobody knows anymore what the main story was and how we got to the last story. The stories are completely random. All she tries to do is keep the sheik happy and live another night.
3. I think in 1001 Nights women are portrayed as cheating and mean creatures but also as having wit like Scheherazade that can outsmart even a king by telling him 1001 stories in as many nights and bearing him 3 children while doing that.
A lot has changed for women in Arabian countries especially in recent years. They are now almost equal to men. They can work outside the home if they want to. I think the Islam has a lot to do with that because it teaches everyone to have respect for each other men and women alike. There still is the Sharia (Islamic Law) though that prohibits women in leadership, so that means only men are capable to lead. Arab women are also very underrepresented in parliament and other political institutions, but in my opinion that is still even so in the United States.
Then there are still areas in the Arabian world were women are not allowed to travel alone or must seek the consent of the husband when they want to leave the country (Example: the movie “not without my daughter” with Sally Field).

1001 nights

1. Twitter has become a nationalwide phenomenon, peer presure makes most people jump into it, and started to share their daily lives. You can use Twitter to share your personal opinion, happiness or sadness from a sentence that comes from their minds. This is my first time to use Twitter, but it is not so interesting or useful as I thought. Everyone has their own lives and their lives might not interest you or that thoughts might not be the tastes of you. I did post something on Twitter as well, "my friend asks me out, but I couldn't go cause I have so many works to do." People might think that is stupid or meaningless. Everyone is different, my words might affect you to sit tight to do your work instead to go out. Accounting to my Twitter's experience, everyone lives in the stellar time.

2. I love the story named "The fishman and the jinni." It paints an attractive picture in my head. The story is about how an old fishman from poor to be wealth. It might not just a coincidence that the god gave him because of his pray. It happened because of his intelligence, wiseness and courage that he has when he is facing the danger. Everything that happened are followed by the regular time. The things that happened step by step. If he caught the Jinni four hunderd years ago, he wouldn't suffer in danger, and he would just become wealth directly. His two daughter may be too young to marry to the king. They may live in another type of the happy or unhappy life. From the progress that the story happens, we can easily see the time of the story is using both teleological time and entropic time.

3. In the tale of the Three Apples. The husband went far away from his home in order to buy some apple for his sick wife. He did it just because his wife loves and wants to eat apples. However, he killed his own wife because he saw a black slave's carrying one of the apple that he bought. The fact is that his son stole from his mother and the slave robbed it from the boy. In the regular law, the man who killed his wife should be the one who will be punished. However, the judge declared that the man who killed his wife is innocent, and he is free to leave. Then who should be the one needs to be punished? The answer is the black slaver!! In the culture of Islamic. The men are the cores of the househood. They are able to in charge of everything. Women have no power, but need to treat their men well, and listen to their men. I believe the " rules" still work today. How come the Islamis women can't show their face or skin? This is so mean and unfair. Isn't it "All men are created equal?" I feel pity for all Islamis women, and I hope they will have their freedom one day!

Twitter

1. I feel as though twitter has had no impact on my life. People on twitter post basically, in my opinion meaningless activities. Nonetheless, the only thing that even fazed me was posted by professor millstein. Her post about how people do not want Thomas Jefferson being taught in schools anymore. Other than that people mostly posted about how they have a lot of work to do, myself included, and I feel as though this is meaningless. Using twitter has had no effect on me. I like using other networking websites such as facebook because it does not soley rely on simply udpating people about what i am doing at the current time, i feel like people using twitter frequently are just looking for something to keep them occupied and it keeps them from really trying to go out and make freinds because they can just stay updated on other people lives. Furthermore, i feel as though the only thing that i gained form using twitter was staying updated on the New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and his tweets, this only because he updated me on transactions the jets made. Moreover, i feel like stellar time would probably be the best way to describe the time on twitter. I believe this because everyones life have to be going on in this manner. People do live their lives in unison with other, people do not just do somehting and then wait for someone else to do somehting to proceed to their next endevor people and time work together.

2. In 1001 nights i feel like teological time is most prevelant throughout the story. i feel like the author attempted to connect all fo the three stories being told. The merchant is telling a story to Jinni. Also, i feel like the author is attempting to tell a story which i felt was pretty cliche. this being the story of good against evil. This was evidnet to me when telling about the king. The narrarator and her two brothers were given one thousand dollars each after their father passed. One of the brothers took the money and went traveling. This is all events that are happening in succession. They are happening over a given period of time and arent really connected with eachother. To add the teological time is considered cause and effect so, the linear timing goes as so, the father dies and then money is inherited, this clearly supports the notion that the story is being told in teological timing.

3. In the tale of the bull and the ass, the wife tries coercing the husband into divulging information regarding his perculiar laugh, the husband is then informed that he has the choice of having sverl wives, so he in essence would just need get a new wife and doesnt even need to keep his current one. Nonetheless, in islamic culture women are treated poorly and that in todays culture somehting like this would not happen. I really didnt like this story because in my opinion a man should not be told what he has to do by anyone especailly his wife when she is viewed as a second class citizen in her culture. This article http://www.islamfortoday.com/ruqaiyyah09.htm, talks about how women are treated poorly in their culture. This article adheres to the notion which sint supported by the husbands inital thoughts to listen to his wife about giving up the secret to hsi laugh

1001 Nights

1 - It seems that everyone has a different daily activity, and everyone is involved in a different event all the time, one is studying, others are working, partying, complaining, some have questions. But at the same time some events are related to one person to another person, such as school activity, asking how a test or your opinion about something that you have interest, talking about the weather… and so forth. At some points it seems that we are in the stellar time, but only if there is an interest or if is something related to what you are participating. And at some instances our lives are not connected at all (entropic), if we didn’t participate and have no interest to whatever is going on we would not pay attention or be affected to what is going on.

2 -I felt that the narrator was trying to connect her situation with the story from the beginning to the end, she used the theological time, she has an intention for two purposed telling the stories to the king, the first would be that she tells the story linking to the next story making him curious to what will happen next and by telling the story she tries to influence his idea of killing someone and forgiving. While reading the tale of the trader and the Jinni, when the trader goes back to pay his “debt” to the Ifrit, three other characters come to the story and each tries to help him by telling what happened to them and who each animals were before they became animals, and why they became animals, in exchange for a fraction of the trader. All of them seems related because a women always takes part of the story, and an act of betrayal. Which made it sound that even someone stabs in the back you should learn how to forgive, or to spare the life, and that there are alternatives to punish a person.

3 - In the past it seems that in the Islam culture women were treated as an object, with no respect, and no right to anything. Throughout time, women were able to gain respect and be part of the “men” society. Today they are somewhat equally treated, not in all aspects but from what it was before, where women had a worse punishment for a same crime committed by a men, from being a “property” of a men, sold and bought in exchange of money, they have overcome and “gained” a lot of respect and right. I believe that if they read the story as something that would be happening now in today’s world, they would be furious and burn the book, for placing them in such inferior being. But still there are some countries that still treat women worse than a dog like in Afganistan.

Fisherman and the Jinni

  1. Anything from works, lives, experiences, and others in the posts have been reflected from each individual twitter’s users in their daily activities. For the most part, it is random view or chaotic events, which each person see it as “come in and go out” without reflecting of its cause and effect as well as the existence of God doing. With that, We just look at things as “not God doing” and it is our own understanding about how the world works. Take AnjaUskeas an example (I hope the author agrees with my uses), said that Mama was going to buy us our second crib and mattress for the babies. Yeah. Thats the most expensive part on the registry. The author as the same goes with all of us, we first look at that the event is necessary as for mom to buy those things to her babies, and no one who thinks about God in giving his hands in making the event to happen. The events reported in the twitters are not only chaotic times, but it also creates the stellar time in which twitter’s users are being affected by what the other written in the posts. AS mine for example, I noticed the comment of ginnyjiang(I hope the author agrees with my uses) saying that “Sunday is my family time! Enjoyyyyyyyyyyyy it!” Sunday is no- related to anyone behaviors, but it changes our perception of what Sunday is really mean to another person. It does affect my own behavior that I want to come back to VietNam this summer, for it has been two and a half year that I have not met my family, and it recalls of my old memories that I had dinner with my family on every Sunday.
  2. The stories are interwoven together making the readers lose a sense, but all it gives a golden meaning in life. The Fisherman and the Jinni starts off with the poor fisherman went to the shore cast his net four times a day, each time he pray his God “Allah.” On his first attempt, he caught the dead donkey. Second time, he cast a full of dirt. Third time, he again pulled out the sand and mud. Before the last attempt, he said “the third is done and as yet Thou hast vouchsafed me nothing” to God, and he had with his a yellow cooper jar with the seal of OUR Lord Sulayman in which later the fishermen opened the cap to determine the value of its treasure. Then, a Jinni appeared with anxiety of being punished by the Sulayman, and the fishermen explained that his Lord Sulayman died for centuries ago, but instead of grant the wishes for having rescue the Jinni out of the jar after 1800 years in darkness, Jinni offers the choices or manner to the death of the fishermen. The fishermen warned that Allah will punish the Jinni for any wrong toward his “Spare my life, so Allah spare shine, and slay me not, lest Allah set one to slay thee”, but it was all for nothing. Thus, he used his keen “This is Jinni; and I am a man to whom Allah hath given a passably cunning wit, so I will now cast about to compass his destruction by my contrivance and by intelligence” to lure the Jinni back to the bottle by questioning about the Jinni real power. The fishermen explained the reason why he want to throw the bottle out the sea with the story of “The Wazir and the Sage Duban.” The story began with Sage Duban as the only person can help to cure the Yunnan King’s lep after all other magnificent medicine men have failed. After the treatment with no pains, the King gave Sage lot of gold pieces and awards, and they were like friends. However, the Minister envied Sage and created doubts to the King that how easily Sage can cure the disease and how threatening that at anytime the magic of Sagan can take the King life. At first the King told the story “King Sindibad and his Falcon” to mention that the Falcon helped the Sindibad not to mistaken drinking the poison of the venom of viper from with the tree dropping water, and the Falcon three times swung the wings to drop the liquid from Sindibad. He soon cut of falcon’s wings and later caught sights of the dropping water as venom above his head, he cried out for the sakes of his falcon after the falcon died later after that. “the Tale of the Husband and the Parrot,” summarized the same meaning with Parrot helping the husband about his mistress’s cheating, but the Parrot was killed from misunderstanding. Both stories provided the readers as to Jinni that the fishermen like Parrot and Falcon should be treated well after help Jinni getting out of the bottle. Coming back with the Minister, he convinced the King that killing Sage was necessary with the story of “The tale of Prince and the Ogress”, in which the wicked Ogress in the jungle disguised as a strange girl to lure men and eat them. After hearing the story, the Yunna King ordered the call of Sage in to kill him, Sage begged the King like the fishermen has done with the Jinni, but all were in vain similar like Jinni insisted to kill fishermen. Sage tricked the King by telling that after cutting his head, putting it in the tray of powder and opening three leaves and reading three lines of the page to your left hand, the head will answer any question that the Yunna king desires to ask. After did the same as Sage, the King was poison by the leaves penetrating to his heart. The lesson to Jinni was that “Spare me and Allah will spare thee; slay me not or Allah shall slay thee.” After hearing all the stories from Fishermen, the Jinni begged that he definitely not betrayed him, so fishermen freed the Jinni out. In return, Jinni helped fishermen caught peculiar fishes and prompted to gave those to the King for money. Like Jinni said, fishermen got lot of money from trading, and the King was astonished by the damsel appearance every time the fishes fried. The King took a journey to where the fishermen caught them, and he went into the palace and found out half men and half stone. The King decided to kill the man’s wife after heard the story of her betraying him to go to with the slave, not only whipping him, but also turning the whole islands into mountains with people into fishes. The king killed the slave first and then disguised like the slave telling the witch to turn the prince and everyone back if not the God will keep him from speaking. Then, the king sliced the witch to two pieces. The end of the story with both the King and the Prince back home safely, and the fishermen have his two daughters get married to them. Through the whole stories, the Teleological time was used a lot, god’s name was used many time as a universal of cause and effect in any event in lives. From the time when fishermen took responsibility to throw Jinni out the sea as the God’s hand caused him to meet Jinni and to seal him again. From the time in the stories such as “The Wazir and the Sage Duban” as an eye for an eye or the God’s prompting in the begging. Everything has a purpose in life, and those stories in here God’s provides the mean of helping other and good results will come forward in your life.
  3. The comprehensive reports presented in this survey detail how women in MENA countries face systematic discrimination in both laws and social customs. In these Arabic stories, religious and social view did not consider about women rights, it judged women as villains and betrayal figures. However, it was the fact of many thousand years ago, and it was challenging in the Middle East culture. Today, Democratic idea about liberty and equal between man and women influences countries in Arab Middle east and North Africa (MENA) as globalization and more educated system spreading out. MENA confronted the issue of both in laws and social inequality to women. It challenges the old system, but it is still reluctant “Although women's rights organizations have repeatedly raised the issue, not one country in the region has a law that clearly makes domestic violence a criminal offense. Islamic culture stands against the view women as inferior, and they support for the reform of injustice system in MEAN from politic, government, judiciary, and private sectors. Those sectors and government turned away toward women when the war in Iraq rose. http://www.freedomhouse.org/template.cfm?page=163

1001 Nights

1) I think stellar time most influences ours lives based on Twitter. According to my own experience participate on Twitter, I just type in whatever i want to talk about. Such as after my Management exam, i want to express about my feeling about my exam, and people respond their opinion on my wall. Twitter is a very good place to express my emotion. And people will telling her experience about the exam. People also talk about their school work in Twitter, such as when was the due day for online question. What happeded in the accounting tutor class. How was the weather and so on. Twitter is a place people can communicate each other. People make conversation on Twitter by asking the question and response the question. It also is a place to express personal expression, share experience and other people will also share their own experience with you. Our lives are all make up with these little things. When you separate them, it is one thing, but when you combine them, it is our lives.

2) I think in "1001 Night" it presented two different times. For example at he beginning of " Tale of the Trader and the Jinni", it was about Ifrit wants to kill the merchant because the merchant kill his hon. And merchant said he is so wealth and the he needs to come back to his city for his wealth and his family and he will "come back to thee at the head of the New Year". Then Ifrit lets him go. When the day of the head of New Year arrives, he came back to the same place as he promise to Ifrit. This is considering as Teleological time. The story also provides entropic time. In the story of "Tale of hte Trader and Jinni", it follows another three stories. "The First Shaykh's Story" is about how first Shaykh's wife turn into gazelle. "The Second Shaykh's Story" is about how second Shaykh's two brother turn into dogs. And the "The Third Shaykh's Story" is about how third Shaykh's wife turn into mule. These are all three different unrelated stories. No one story lead to another.

3) "1001 Night" is deriving from Arabic cultures. In the story, it shows the evil of women such as they were witch and would tried to use their magic to turn their husbands into animals. Or they were cheating on their husbands if their husbands not at home. Most of women would stay at home and their husbands traveled around make money. Before Islam came to Arabic, women had no any right. They were treated with no respect. They had no freedom and they can not own any property. Men felt shame if his wife gave a birth of girl. Women in Islamic country today are much different than women back in traditional Arabic culture. Islam people are following the “Quran” which “Islam considers a woman to be equal to a man and as his partner in his life”. They have right to go out in the community and work outside of society. A woman in Islam has the right to knowledge and education.

1001 Nights

1) On the twitter, people like to use pass tense and present. They just like to tell others what happened or what is going on. Also, some people want to share their ideas with others. So the twitter is like a classroom where people (students) can learn and give knowledge. I see that twitter is very amusing because if all of friends meet on twitter at same time, they will discuss whatever topic they chose as like conference call. It will be like they are seating in the same classroom. Twitter have changed my daily schedule little bit because I all ways want to long in the computer to see what somebody have posted.

2) On the 1001Nights, I see that there is a lot of fates play round. For example when I look through of this story “TALE OF THE TRADER AND THE JINNI” It seems like how people used to teach kids in Africa in the time antic. In the night, all kids get together under the big tree call “Baobab” and tell a tale according to their lives in the town. From the tale, they can teach kids how to be careful in the life. Like it happened to merchant, he was on his way to collect his money. Then Ifrit appeared to with a drawn sword to kill him. Therefore, kids can learn from that kind of fiction how to behave in the life to make good live. Also on this 1001Nigths, I see that there is stellar time in the beginning where “an Ifrit appeared the merchant” and interfere his daily schedule. Also, when I put all story together I see that the narrator uses the entropic time. He just put three different stories with the same name “Shakh’s story”.

3) Since Islamic religion has spread over Arabic countries, the Arabic countries have changed a lot especially against women. According to scholars, Arabic people used to kill their baby girls because for girl to get married at that time, her parent had to have money. Therefore, most families didn’t want to have a baby girl. However, Islamic religion has changed all of that behavior in Arabic world. So, we can see today, women are treated with respect in Islamic countries. There scholars ladies to today in the Arabic world, Islam recommended "thateveryone must looks for knowledge".In the Islamic community, the must respectful person after “Imam” is the women. So, I think any old fashion behavior against women will not be accepted today in the Islamic countries.

★★★★★★★☆★★

1. Lives on Twitter are mostly influenced by stellar time. The heavy rain and our online homework are the biggest examples for this weekend. We had our own scenarios of fighting with the wind, umbrellas breaking, and complaining on the Internet. And also, some classmates raised and discussed their concerns of the “100 Nights” homework. One finished the work earlier when another classmate questioned on the deadline. Eventually, they found out that the due day is going to be on Wednesday, while a student dedicated a whole day, which she should have spent it on her accounting test tomorrow, on this homework. Scenarios of our lives were and are affecting each other, maybe present, maybe in the future. Furthermore, we also have some comments are in teleological time order. For instance, “my internet is down just because of the rain!!!!!!” and “expecting someone to call me for not going to work tonight...”

2. I would say all the three types of time theory are presented in 1001. For example, in “the Fisherman and the Jinni,” if the fisherman doesn’t cast a jar of yellow copper, he won’t have an intelligence fight against the Ifrit, the fisherman won’t catch the colored fish and turn over to the king, and the king won’t save Ensorcelled, and the fisherman won’t become the richest person. This is a cause – effect relationship, so it fulfills the teleological time theory. And also, the “1001 Nights” story itself is in chronological order. Second, the fisherman story also shows the entropic time theory. “The Tale of the Wazir and the Sage Duban,” “King Sindibad and his Falcon,” “The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot,” and “The Tale of the Prince and the Ogress,” are, I believe, parallel stories, which have no necessary relationship with either the cause (the fisherman story) and effect (the king and prince story) or these stories themselves. They are randomly picked by the narrator to extend her life. Third, overall this group of stories presents stellar time theory. Although the interaction between the fisherman and the Ifrit doesn’t result the saving of Prince Ensorcelled directly, without the fisherman and Ifrit, the King would not get the colored fish and therefore meet the prince and save him. And also, if the prince’s wife doesn’t turn his lower half body into stone and turn their people into colored fish, there won’t be that saving story.

3. I would like to focus on the role of women in today’s Islamic countries. First of all, women have a negative image in “1001 nights.” In “the Tale of the Ensorcelled Prince,” the prince’s wife betrays, stones, and tortures him. In “the Tale of the Husband and the Parrot,” the wife cheats with a Turkish man when her husband is away. Even the beginning story of King Shahryar and his brother, both their harems cheat on them when they leave. In traditional Arabic culture, women are considered as inferior to men. Today, this gap still exists. An article on New York Times Blog reports that women in Saudi are legally not allowed to drive on highways (http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/12/saudi-woman-drives-for-youtube-protest/?scp=2&sq=islamic%20women&st=cse). Even though a reader points out that it is a “social taboo” rather than stated by law, we still feel the social, cultural gap between men and women. However, situations do change over time. Women now are educated and some are trying to fight for their rights. According to another report on New York Time about a year ago (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/16/world/asia/16afghan.html?scp=7&sq=islamic%20women&st=cse), Afghan women have a sense to seek for equality, and the same rights to men.

The Times We are In

1. Based on the readings or Tweets on Twitter I would have to say both Teleological and Stellar times are being used. My reason for Teleological time is mostly that the postings had to do with individuals different time of day which lead to the end of their day. It was chronological for the most part. It reflected what they did at that present time and what they were doing at the latter time of the day. For the Stellar time, being that most of us are students our lives interwine through school and our classes and you might also be able to relate to the posting that were there. At one point i was really affected by something that one of my peers wrote. The posting dealt with women and money, at first reading i got annoyed at the fact that men would think of women in that manner. Later i wondered to myself what did that individual mean by the posting up to this day i have not gotten any clarity and it. Other postings stirred emotions of confusion, acceptance, empathy (at one point). An anticipated thing that happended was Twitter itself which set me off for a while. It is not a part of my daily activities or routine of doing things and it was hard to incorporate something that was worthless to me. A fear came over me as i am getting more into the business/career field and i have heard stories of how twitter and other networking sites have cause individuals to loose their jobs or even not get hired. This made me very uneasy whenever i had to post anything. I watched everything that i did with such care as to not taint who i am as a person.

2. In the readings of 1001 Nights I recognized initially when the "Tale of the Bull and the Ass" started i found myself wondering what happened. Before in the reading everything was in one specific time period and then here we are somewhere else, speaking about "Bull and Ass" After reading much more i recognized that it was simply that the story had a meaning to it. At the moment the father was trying to convince his daughter not to go through with her plan of going to King Shahryar's chamber. I found myself lost in what time they were in as i was constantly thinking it was all together. In the readings i would have to say that it depicts two times, Teleological and Stellar. In terms of Stellar the reading does affect life for an individual whether it is good or bad. The daughter Shahrazad actually took the story and used it to propel her into the kings chambers. My reason for saying Teleological time, because it leads up to a purpose whether known from beginning or at the end. Each reading had a purpose to cause one to rethink the reason the wanted to do something or cease a situation bound to happen.

3. In the Arabic culture I have read and gotten the opportunity to notice that they are very big on loyalty and respect. Based on the reading from 1001 Nights, it all started from a lack of loyalty in ones marriage. I find that if the readings were truly from Arabic Culture they depicted it wrongly but nevertheless we will find truth in knowing that Arabics have been know for their loyaltys. Women are also seen as respectful beings, one should honor then and vice versa. If these readings were to be shown in the Islamic countries i believe that it would be looked up with scorn at it misrepresent who they are on many levels.

1.
Most people live in teleological time.On twitter mostly they mention about what happen in their daily lives. How their daily lives affect their feelings and react toward what happened. As a writer every time I write I had a different feeling. One day I am so happy sometimes angry or sad. As write journal good thing about twitter is there is respond on what I am writing about myself. I realized that I am not only one that feels that way and so many people feel same as me. Most exciting about twitter is that I could experience different people whom I was interest in such as my hero Ki moon Ban who is current Secretary-General of the UN.Everytime I was wandering what is his schedule and what is his life would be as Secretary-General of the UN. He is listing all the meetings he had and his schedule. I could have indirect experience in his lives.
2.
Because narrator is telling the stories for 1001 nights and some tales are framed within other tales, this story seems never ending.the story “Wazir of King Yunan with the sage Duban” is within another story “THE FISHERMAN AND THE JINNI.”The whole story is one of the largest in the main story. Most of story tells that good triumphs over evil and evil’s tragic end was what he or she deserved. People change into animals sometimes animal that was transformed turn in to human. For example, in “The Trader and the Jinny,’ stepson turn into calf and her mom also turn into a heifer. In this story most of story is Teleological time. For example “in THE FISHERMAN AND THE JINNI”,it begins with fisherman's daily life. Also there is entropic or chaotic time. In the story “The Tale of the Ensorcelled Prince”,Mahmud’s wife put the drug on his wine and he does not know what is really happening around him because of drug. Whole household knows what is going on but not him. I t is example of chaotic time.
3.
The Koran says “Man and woman were created of a single soul," and man and woman are moral equals in the sight of God. It seems man and woman has equal value. But reality is different than Koran says. In Western culture man has more power than woman. Of course woman’s status has been upgraded than 19th century but still woman in house has less voice than man. Some woman who is not educated is treating bad and has no voice at all. In “The Tale of the Ensorcelled Prince”, there is man whose name is Mahmud. He believes that his wife loves him so much but reality is that she was cheating on him. He found out that his wife put drug on his wine every night and went outside. After he hears this story from slaves saying, one day he pretended he was drinking and follows her. Finally he found out that his wife had an affair with slave. In Islamic culture women seems have no right to be happy. According to Ruqaiyyah Waris Maqsood, “A good Muslim woman, for her part, should always be trustworthy and kind. She should strive to be cheerful and encouraging towards her husband and family, and keep their home free from anything harmful.” what is the standard of judging whether she is good woman or not?? In Islamic culture woman have to induce and can’t raise her voice. Woman has to focus on her family’s happiness than herself. What about her happiness??

Twitter, Husband & the Parrot, Bull & the Ass and the pattern of time.

  1. I have never thought that I will ever open a Twitter account and I also will be using it such as posting personal reflections experiences etc. But my professor had made it happen. By using Twitter the experience that I have got is kind of different and I can say not boring but nothing much exciting so far. People including myself and my classmates are articulating their daily lives and activities which makes is seems like that the World is really becoming smaller and interactive. I would like to mention that Twitter did not have any direct affect on me but some of the responses did make my mind change I also think that all these scenarios make me live in Teleological/Stellar time. I am mentioning stellar time because what and how we share our thoughts in Twitter, which does affect each other in a way. It is also teleological because what we are posting it has a cause and then it effects others when they read it and responses on top of it. It’s amazing how all the social network sites connect people that most of the time they never know each other and most of the time they never get to meet in person. One more important thing I noticed that people do not keep much privacy. So am I. I didn’t keep any privacy to when I was talking about my personal life such as being away from my husband and child. About Twitter, my opinion will be that things happen for reason. After I started using Twitter, I have become more open-minded, became less reluctant to expose my feelings which indirectly affecting others too. People are also connecting with each other by the affects of their shared reflection of their lives.
  1. The stories of 1001 are intermingled of different inventional stories which mean that there are small stories inside of large stories and it has steadiness. Most of the stories are taken from Arabic customs and to understand the themes of those stories we would need to pay good attention to that culture. The story The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot fits an ideal example for an Arabic society. In that story the Husband loves his wife so much which leads to tremendous amount of jealousy. He managed to get a parrot to keep on eye to his wife while he goes away. Later on he finds out from his parrot that his wife had cheated him with a Turkish man. He then violently beats up his wife kills her and as well as the Turkish man. This kind of example depicts about the power of an Arabic husband towards his wife. In some of the Arabic tradition men are meant to be the one and only powerful and in-charge of the house. Women have no rights, they are treated like an object and they are also bound to listen and obey their husband. Such as in the story The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot, the observance of Islam has a similarity and it is obvious that men are higher than women because they can not go against men. Even though to punish their wives, if it takes them to kill her that wouldn’t be a big deal because they are ordered through Quran. There as a form of Teleological time been seen at this story which has a cause and affect with a beginning that leads to an end relating to an intention of life. http://en.allexperts.com/q/Arab-Culture-2719/Arabian-women.htm
  1. In the 1001 reading there are stories within stories, they are interrelated, and big role of destiny is apparent. A perfect example is the story of the Bull and the Ass which demonstrates the adorns for animals. It is a story of a farmer who is given power to interpret animal language. This is a story where the Bull nags to another animal Donkey that the amount of hard work he has to do. After listening this, the Donkey tries to suggest the Bull how can he escape himself from not doing the work. But the frame hears their discussion and makes the Donkey do all the work that the Bull has to do. Then the story takes a dramatic move when the Donkey cleverly puts back the Bull in the previous situation. At the same time the farmer makes fun on them by laughing at them which makes his wife upset, and we can see another story starts with the farmer and his wife where the farmer instructed by a dog in relation to his wife. Then the farmer decides to leak the secret about the gifted power by the cost of his life because of his love towards his wife was remarkable. From the dog’s advice he realizes that he does adore his wife so much that it is not necessary to tell every secrets of his life. These two stories seem to have a teleological time where we can see cause and effect takes a place in order. Beginning is leading to the end. http://www.islamfortoday.com/ruqaiyyah09.htm

Twitter, Time, and 100 Lashes.

1. On Friday night, I was up on my roof with my best friend, smoking cigs inside (like where the elevators bring you up, there's a little entranceway to our roof, with windows, and even a bathroom). It had been drizzling last time I was outside, and I didn't feel like getting wet. I was sitting on a radiator when all of a sudden there was a huge gust of wind and the door swung open and simultaneously I saw stars and my head was throbbing. The window which i was sitting in front of was blown, by a gust of wind, out of it's frame, and it fell on my head. I immediately started crying hysterically when I could finally move again I went straight to the bathroom because I thought I was going to throw up. Anyway, I spent yesterday sleeping, pretty much all day. My boyfriend had come over at some point, soaking wet, but I just thought he got splashed by a car or something. When I went on Twitter in the evening, so many people were complaining about this huge rain storm that inconvenienced their lives so much. Most people on Twitter live in Teleological time, things happen, like the rain, and they effect people's lives, and they Twitter about it. Most people Twittered about menial tasks, like eating, homework, work, weather, sports, and things like that. These are all things that take place in an order, or have a beginning, a middle, and an end. You turn on a basketball game, you watch the game, you know the winner. Beginning, middle, end. I felt like I was living in Entropic time this weekend, because I really had no idea the rain was so bad, it effected everyone's lives so much it seems, but I was not affected by it at all. I feel kind of like I was knocked so hard on the head that the outside world had stopped for the past two days, I barely had contact with anyone, I didn't go outside, and I had NO idea how bad the rain actually was.

2. Within the tale of the Trader and the Jinni, There are three stories within that story, each about an old Shaykh and how the animal(s) they were with were different members of their family, each turned into an animal for a different reason, and each man had a different reason for walking by the trader, however when they learned the story of the Trader and the Jinni, each decided to stay and help and attempt to save the Trader. I believe that this is an example of stellar time, because these are all different occurrences and they were all on different paths, but each stumbled upon the Trader, and these animals are the reason that these Shaykhs are saving this Trader's life. If the Shaykhs didn't have these animals and these wonderful stories about them, the Jinni would have killed the Trader, and not spread his debt among the three Shaykhs. Their lives were all effected by each other's, even though they did not know each other before this point in time, the rest of their lives were effected by this meeting.

3. In The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot, A man buys a parrot to stay home while he travels and tell him what goes on in his home while he's gone. When he returns, the parrot tells the man that his wife has been cheating on him every day and night since he left. The woman has her maids deceive the parrot, causing the man to think the parrot is lying, and he kills her. Later, one of the wife's maids tells the husband that the parrot was telling the truth, the husband kills his wife and her lover, and mourns the loss of the parrot, for the parrot was the one telling the truth. In Islamic culture, adultery is called Zina. Zina, according to the Qur'an is "sexual intercourse outside marriage between two consenting adults." The penalty for committing Zina, according to the Old Testament, is 100 whippings or lifelong house arrest. If the offender repeats his or her actions or is a nuisance to the community, the penalty is being stoned to death.

I believe the Trader's reaction to his wife's Zina would be appropriate today, because she had another man in her home and in her bed every day that her husband was away. They were not stoned to death, but killed with his sword, which I believe is a light sentence, a quick death, as opposed to being stoned. I don't think death is the proper punishment for cheating, however the wife lied to her husband, deceived this parrot, and continued to cheat on her husband. She went through all this trouble to deceive him twice over, and she got caught, and I believe that the wife would have been punished today, perhaps by 100 lashings or by house arrest.
